Nancy Gillis will examine the effect of the Homestead Act on the Great Plains tribes by looking at changes in food, clothing, housing, family structure, gender roles, land control and political relationships.

Bill Hayes: Colonel Robert W. Furnas, A Brownville Statesman’s Military Service
Bill Hayes will give an overview of the military career of Robert W. Furnas, including details on his appointments to command a variety of troops during the American Civil War. He will also examine the issues faced on the Great Plains and Nebraska Territory during the war and how they influenced the military campaigns Furnas participated in.

This session is an opportunity to learn more about the native Pawpaw trees in southeast Nebraska. It will include a presentation on the Pawpaw tree by John Lokke, Pawpaw recipes for sampling and a walk to see the Pawpaw trees on the Steamboat Trace.

Bill Clemente will discuss how to attract birds in the winter, migratory birds traveling through Nebraska and patterns for bald eagles.
